When the recipe calls for 1 tsp of garlic/ginger paste and you have fresh garlic/ginger on hand, how do you make the paste? Here is an easy tool I have been using for the past few years.Microplane zester!
Peel garlic/ginger, and grate through the zester. You will get fine paste of garlic/ginger. This is dishwasher safe. So after using, just throw it in the dishwasher so you don't have to worry about cleaning the sharp blades.
Other uses: To zest lemon/orange, to make fresh nutmeg powder, to grate cheese finely etc.

I bought Microplane in FL,it has wide two size grater coarse and fine and I LOVE it!! It grates so fine, only danger is it is so sharp, got to very careful. You do get a shield to protect your fingers in Williams and Sonoma.
Enjoy it rp!:)
dear RP,
i love my microplane. it costs about 20 dollars elsewhere, but there's a very similar thing at home depot to shave wood, that costs much much less.
RP,I have to check ,whether that is available here..Is that expensive?
RP,Just now only I noticed English Malayalam Glossary..I am sure that U posted that mainly for me.(hihi)Thank You dear.
Thanks RP, got to buy one
Fabulous idea, RP. Thanks!
Yep... this sure is a great helper....So nice of you to share such ideas with us. Thanks Rp.
Rg.
Rp, this is Rg again. I've a question for you which is not related to this topic though. I've noticed you use brown rice for most of your recipes..Now we buy brown rice also...but it takes forever to cook. I tried soaking before cooking also but still it isn't perfect. Any tips for getting it right?
Thanks
Rg.
Hey RP, I just saw these microplane jesters on TV a few days back. They cost about 13 to 15 Pounds here in the UK . And yes they are superb and worth every penny.
this looks great, will have to check this out. I use my hand grater from india for quick ginger grating.
Does it have sharp edges ? I usually use a hand cheese grater which is very good too.
thats a good info RP. will look out for this zester. thank u dear:)
Congrats on your new 'job', RP.
Microplane is something that I have held in my hands for long times at various stores, but have always put back. But if you have one, I am getting it too :)
Hi RP,
This is my first of what will be many many visits to your blog. Love it! The English translations are thoughtful and welcome, thank you!

asha, yes it is dangerous until you are used to it. I have grated my finger a couple of times. But now I got the hang of it and am more confident. :) I will look for the finger protectors anyway. It is always good to have some of those.
bee, I have heard about that home depot one too. I bought this online from amazon.
secretof, (kf?) it might be available there too. Check the microplane website. The glossay? nah! I just wanted to fill something on my sidebars. Thats why. I am glad if it is useful to you.
Rg, we love brown rice, and cook it almost 5 times a week! It does take longer to cook, depending on the type you have, it may take from 50 to 90 minutes. If you ask injipennu, she will teach you how to cook it in a pressure cooker. I don't prefer the cooker method though. We don't soak that rice.
mishmash, it is sharp. But what you get is a nice paste, not grated garlic/ginger. Thats why I like it. :)
sandeepa, linda, anupama, mandira, sia's corner, thank you for your comments.
gini, thanks. Hope you enjoy microplane.
cynthia, welcome!
sushma, coffee, thanks a lot.
RP, I did buy a microplane and the first thing I grated with it was some ginger for some fiery red fish curry!!
